In 1787 President George Washington himself authorized the building of Portland Head Lighthouse. It stands towering at 72 feet tall and is one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States. Its history stands just as tall, playing the crucial role of guiding Union ships through the bay during the Civil War.

Below the lighthouse the sea crashes against the boulders with a rhythmic intensity, spraying salty ocean water into the air. The sun setting graces the clouds with bright pinks, and soft oranges. In the background, a rustic sailboat glides gracefully through the bay, its billowing sails catching the last bits of daylight. I couldn't have asked for a more picturesque moment, it perfectly captures the allure of Maine and enduring romance of the sea.
